One of the world’s most famous live elephants was Jumbo. First appearing in the 1860’s in European zoos. His name became synonymous with “huge”, and on arrival in London he became a source of national pride. In the 1880’s Barnum shipped him to the US where the 7-ton hero starred in “the greatest show on earth” until his death in an accident in 1885.
